Arne Slot took charge of his first Northwest derby between Liverpool and Manchester United this weekend, with the Dutchman coming away the victor.

And Slot has now claimed something about Liverpool’s rivalry with United that people back home in the Netherlands may not agree with.

Slot names Liverpool – Manchester United as the biggest fixture in the world

Speaking to the press after the game, Slot admitted that Liverpool’s tie with United is viewed across the globe as the biggest game in the world, though the Reds boss said some Dutch people might not agree.

Feyenoord vs Ajax is widely considered in the Netherlands as the biggest game of the year, yet having managed the Rotterdam club, even Slot can admit that Liverpool’s encounters with United are much bigger affairs.

Slot said when asked if Liverpool’s tie against United is the biggest he’s ever managed: “I’m not sure the people in Holland will 100% agree as Feyenoord v Ajax is quite a good game, but all over the world people see this is the bigger game.

“It was special to be involved in this game and it’s only special if you win it and that’s what we did. Really pleased we won it but maybe even more with how we did it.”

In terms of quality, atmosphere and hatred, Liverpool facing United will not rank high compared to other rivalries and derbies even based in the United Kingdom.

Yet when it comes to global outreach and actual fans watching, no fixture in world football is bigger than Liverpool against United, with the two sides the biggest and best-supported teams in the Premier League.
