Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher blast Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai for ‘unprofessional’ moment against Man United

Liverpool made a statement on Sunday as they thrashed Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Reds had made an excellent start to life under Arne Slot heading into the game, winning two games out of two and failing to concede a single goal.

But the game against United was a completely different test. On the patch of their biggest rivals in just the third game of the season, it was never going to be easy.

In the end, though, the Reds absolutely blew them away. Two goals for Luis Diaz and another for Mohamed Salah did the damage. 3-0 to Liverpool was how it ended.

In all honesty, however, it should probably have been more. One man guilty of ensuring it wasn’t was Dominik Szoboszlai.

Dominik Szoboszlai slammed for ‘cocky’ play

Szoboszlai was very good indeed against United on Sunday. Gary Neville claimed that the Liverpool midfield ‘absolutely destroyed’ United and the Hungarian was part of that.

Despite a difficult end to last season, Szoboszlai looks fully fit and seems to be enjoying his slightly more advanced role in Slot’s system.

That was rewarded against United, as the 23-year-old registered an assist for Salah to put the game to bed in the second-half.

But commentating on the game for Sky Sports, both Neville and Jamie Carragher were not impressed by Szoboszlai’s attempts to add a fourth.

Receiving the ball just outside the six yard box, Szoboszlai just needed to put his foot through it and it was surely 4-0.

Instead, the Hungary captain took an extra touch and tried to take it around the defender. Neville and Carragher weren’t having it.

“What is he doing? Just finish it,” blasted Carragher. “He is trying to be cocky. That is ridiculous from Szoboszlai.”

“He is messing around there,” Neville agreed. “He should be absolutely rollocked by the rest of his teammates for that. Something like that I call it unprofessional. It is the sort of thing you do in training.”

Nothing to be concerned about with Szoboszlai

While Szoboszlai should certainly have scored the chance to go 4-0 to the good, this was a little over the top from Carragher and Neville.

We’re not sure the Hungary captain was trying to be cocky, he just couldn’t quite get it out of his feet.

It has to be said that Szoboszlai can at times exude an air of arrogance about his play, similar to that of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

However, that should only really be a problem if you are not contributing to the team. On Sunday – on throughout the season so far – Szoboszlai cannot be accused of that.

The former RB Leipzig man ran the show alongside Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch and had afforded to take his foot ever so slightly off the pedal.
