Liverpool are still looking for one more key member of staff to add to Arne Slot’s team

With the transfer window now closed, Liverpool can no longer add any new players to their first-team squad.

The summer was a slightly disappointing one, with the Reds failing to address potential problems in defence and midfield.

Nevertheless, perhaps it was always going to be a tricky first off-season for Arne Slot. Having arrived at Anfield to replace Jurgen Klopp, Slot has overseen a fair bit of upheaval already.

Having kept much of the Liverpool squad together, much of that change has been in relation to Slot’s coaching staff.

Out have gone Pep Lijnders, Peter Krawietz, John Achterberg, Vitor Matos and Jack Robinson, with Sipke Hulshoff, John Heitinga, Fabian Otte and Aaron Briggs coming in to replace them. Despite all the chopping and changing, though, Slot is reportedly looking for one more.

Liverpool still looking for set-piece specialist

Liverpool have every right to be pleased with the way they have handled the transition away from Klopp and his staff this summer.

Yes, more business could have done in the window, that is clear. However, after two Premier League games the Reds have two Premier League wins.

Slot and his backroom team have gelled nicely and judging from the clips and pictures seen from the AXA Training Centre, the players are enjoying things under their leadership, too.

Despite that, journalist David Lynch says that Slot is still not fully satisfied with the make-up of his team.

Writing on his Substack on Saturday morning, Lynch claims that the Dutch coach continues to look for a new set-piece specialist.

“Liverpool’s hunt for a specialist set-piece coach is still ongoing (with Aaron Briggs picking up the slack in the meantime),” says the journalist.

“But they remain keen to make gains in this area in 2023-24.”

Why do Liverpool want a set-piece specialist?

Liverpool scored 15 set-piece goals during the 2023/24 Premier League season, which was the fourth highest in the league.

While that is a pretty good haul, Slot clearly wants more this season.

Arsenal and Manchester City were both ultimately ahead of the Reds in this specific metric and closing that gap could have a knock-on effect to more important rankings.

Liverpool are clearly prepared to take their time with finding the right person, though. The Reds were said to be close to adding a set-piece specialist back in July.

Over a month on and that search is still seemingly ongoing. Let’s hope Slot is able to find what he’s looking for before long.
