Liverpool look set to end the summer transfer window with just the one new player added to the squad.

The Reds have of course made two signings in the market, but Giorgi Mamardashvili will not arrive until 2025.

So, for the here and now, the sole new addition to the Liverpool squad is Italian winger Federico Chiesa.

Chiesa is already in training with Liverpool and has been meeting his new teammates and the Reds’ coaching staff on Friday.

It was a surprise move from the Reds which has perhaps divided opinion a little. But according to Arsenal midfielder Jorginho, Liverpool supporters should be very pleased by what their club has done.

Jorginho raves about Federico Chiesa

Although he has arrived fit and ready to go, Arne Slot has confirmed that it’s unlikely that Chiesa will play against Man United on Sunday.

Nevertheless, the 26-year-old is set to be another weapon in Slot’s attack for the rest of the season.

In a tight battle against the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City in the league this term, there will no doubt be times when Chiesa can make the difference.

Arsenal are one of the few other Premier League sides who have an Italian player in their squad, with Jorginho having swapped Chelsea for the Gunners in 2023.

And having won Euro 2020 together with their country, it seems that the midfielder is a big fan of Chiesa’s.

That’s according to Jamie Redknapp anyway. Speaking to Sky Sports News on Friday (30/08/24 3.24pm), Redknapp shared what he’s recently been told about Chiesa by Jorginho.

“As a Liverpool fan, I am delighted with this bit of business,” said the former Reds captain. “It’s a difficult one because he obviously had a lot of injuries.

“I think back to the Euros when they won it, Italy. I am actually when I am now, I am filming a League of Their Own. I was talking to Jorginho about him, he was on the show a couple of days ago, I said, ‘what do you think about him’, and he said, ‘he carried our Italian side for so long, he was amazing’.

“He has obviously had injuries,” added Redknapp. “But if Liverpool can get him back to fitness and make sure they manage his minutes carefully, they have got an absolute bargain and a star. He has got amazing pace.”

When Federico Chiesa could make his Liverpool debut

If Chiesa does not play against United on Sunday – and that seems likely at the moment – then it could be a while before we see him on the pitch for Liverpool.

After this weekend’s game at Old Trafford the Reds do not then play for another two weeks.

The first international break of the new season is already upon us, with Liverpool out of action until Saturday September the 14th.

The Reds will play Nottingham Forest at Anfield on that day, meaning Chiesa’s debut could be in-front of the home crowd.

In the intervening period, it is not yet clear whether Chiesa will be away with his national team, with Luciano Spalletti yet to announce his squad for the upcoming games.
