Liverpool transfers: Juventus reject Reds £85m bid for Federico Chiesa

Juventus rejected a bid from Liverpool for Federico Chiesa, according to reports. It seems the Italian won’t be on the move.

This comes from La Repubblica. They claim Liverpool put an £85m (€100m) bid in for Federico Chiesa.

Juventus, however, rejected the offer. They will not sell the 23-year-old, seemingly for any price.

This isn’t the first link between Liverpool and Chiesa, of course. CalcioMercato claim the Reds tried to sign him a year ago, only for Juventus to swoop in.

Now they’re apparently back in for Chiesa but Corriere Dello Sport says The Old Lady won’t sell. And it appears they’re right, if that £85m bid is accurate.

Liverpool bid for Federico Chiesa

We find it next to impossible to believe that Liverpool actually bid that for Chiesa. £85m is, by all accounts, far beyond what the Reds can pay this summer.

Especially for just one player. That would be an £85m that didn’t correct any of their midfield problems post-Gini Wijnaldum.

The Reds apparently have to sell-to-buy going forward, per the Athletic, and they certainly haven’t sold enough to fund an £85m transfer. In fact, even if they sell everyone, that surely won’t happen.

But we do stop just marginally short of ‘impossible’. The Liverpool Echo claims the club could bring in £70m in player sales if all goes to plan.

In that scenario, perhaps some extra money in the bank could get them up to £85m. But they haven’t made those sales yet.

Regardless, it seems Chiesa is off the table. He’ll cost far around £100m, judging by this, and that’s certainly beyond Liverpool’s reach. In fact, we’re not entirely sure he’s worth that.

But we also wouldn’t expect Liverpool to suddenly bid £85m for anyone else. From everything we understand, that’s just not an option this summer.
