It’s safe to say that Liverpool did not see the best of Fabio Carvalho after signing him in 2022.
Having torn up the Championship as a teenager, much had been expected of Carvalho when he arrived at Anfield two years ago.
However, despite some early promise, it soon became clear that the Portugal U21 international did not really have a place in the Liverpool squad.
Very much an attacking midfielder, Carvalho simply could not find a position in Jurgen Klopp’s 4-3-3- system.
After a couple of loans last season, Carvalho came back determined to prove a point to new head coach Arne Slot. But despite some good performances in the summer friendlies, the 21-year-old has now been sold to Brentford.

Fabio Carvalho opens up on Liverpool exit
Liverpool fans were disappointed about Carvalho’s exit. Although the youngster never really showed his best at the club, he still has the chance to become a quality player.
Nevertheless, there is also a feeling that a move was the best thing for all parties.
Carvalho will hopefully now get regular football at a good Premier League side, Brentford get a top talent who could become even better in future and Liverpool get a big profit.
Having already made his Premier League debut for his new club, Carvalho will be back at Anfield already as Brentford take on the Reds on Sunday.

And ahead of this weekend’s meeting, the former Liverpool forward has been speaking to Sky Sports about why he decided to look for a move this summer.
“I did [think I’d have a role to play], but then it’s like, when you play, I thought I did alright to be fair, but as a footballer you get that feeling where you know certain players aren’t back and when they come back things change and that happened,” says Carvalho.
“Then I’m not just going to stay at Liverpool, as much as I love the club and it’s one of the best clubs in the world and I’ve got nothing but love for the fans.
“I’m not going to just sit on the bench, because what’s the point?”
Will Liverpool regret Fabio Carvalho sale?
While it is hard to argue against Liverpool selling Carvalho this summer – and the player himself being bang up for it – there is a feeling that the Reds could come to regret this.
Upon signing Carvalho, it looked like Liverpool had one of the best young talents in the country on their hands.
However, they have not been able to harness that and if he goes on to do well at Brentford and beyond, then questions should be asked about why exactly that was.
Liverpool have often been good at knowing when a player needs moving on and isn’t going to make it at the club. But perhaps they got this one wrong.
One thing’s for sure, anyway. As much as he might love the club and the fans, Carvalho will be doing everything possible to make a point and get on the scoresheet at Anfield on Sunday.
