Liverpool have made a major sale in the summer transfer window, selling Fabio Carvalho to Brentford for £27million.

Phil Thompson compared Carvalho to Philippe Coutinho, with the Reds attacker having shone in pre-season.

But Arne Slot has decided to move on the 21-year-old, with Liverpool retaining a 17.5% sell-on clause for Carvalho.

The player featured heavily under the Dutchman on the pre-season tour of the USA, and was one of the standout players.

But Liverpool were without many first-team regulars, with Carvalho one of many youngsters seemingly just filling in the gaps.

He scored three goals from his 21 competitive Reds appearances, having moved to Anfield from Fulham in 2022.

His time on Merseyside was, of course, disrupted by loan spells, with former Liverpool ace Danny Murphy now reacting to Carvalho’s latest move.

“I am a little bit disappointed,” Murphy said on talkSPORT (7.04pm, 12 August). “I know they have a big squad and a lot of good players, but I thought maybe sending him out last year on loan and having a good season, maybe this year he gets some more games.

“But I understand the financial aspects. It’s good money. He is a super little player. Maybe the emergence of Harvey Elliott and doing so well is another factor in it.

“But yeah, I am disappointed, but I just hope he goes to Brentford and gets the platform to show himself at this level because he has got talent.”

Fabio Carvalho can shine at Brentford after Anfield exit

Carvalho wasn’t exactly given a lot of opportunities to impress under Jurgen Klopp, having been sent out on loan twice last season.

The youngster endured a difficult time in Germany with RB Leipzig, but later shone in the Championship with Hull City.

He now has the chance to impress at a higher level, having joined Thomas Frank’s Brentford setup on a five-year deal.

It looks to be a very exciting transfer for Carvalho, who should be able to quickly find his feet with the Bees.

The talented attacker will be surrounded by like-minded players in the final third in West London, and may even come back to haunt Liverpool this season.
