There’s a real feeling that Liverpool are about to make a late move to sign ‘phenomenal’ Premier League defender

Liverpool are close to heading into the final week of the transfer window without a signing to their name.

The Reds have had three whole months in which to bring players in to boost the quality in their first-team squad.

But with just nine days left to do that, Arne Slot still hasn’t signed anyone at all. Supporters are rightly starting to get anxious.

Nevertheless, there is still a little time left. Liverpool look set to bring in even more money with the sale of up to five players and there’s hope that those funds can be put to good use.

As things tick down towards deadline day, there is reportedly a feeling around the Premier League that Liverpool could be about to do something big.

Liverpool could make late Marc Guehi move

While two weeks ago it had looked virtually certain that Liverpool would sign a new midfielder this summer, that now seems unlikely.

It has been suggested that Liverpool had no alternative to Martin Zubimendi to strengthen the middle of the pitch and once the Spaniard said no, that was that.

Instead, Slot’s most likely signing – aside from Giorgi Mamardashvili – now seems more probable to be in defence.

Sepp van den Berg looks like he’s on his way out and Joe Gomez could be, too. Liverpool have seen the disasters that can happen when you leave yourselves short at the back and they won’t want to do so again.

As a result, defenders are once again being linked with moves to Anfield. Reports from Tuesday claimed that Liverpool could push to sign Marc Guehi from under Newcastle’s nose.

And according to the Express, the Reds’ interest in Guehi as a potential target does remain.

Although Newcastle have had four bids for the 24-year-old turned down – and could reportedly return with a fifth – it’s claimed that Guehi may reject any move to the Magpies in favour of one of the Premier League’s top six.

With that in mind, it’s said that there ‘remains a feeling’ that Liverpool could ‘strike late’ in the window with a big offer to lure Guehi to Merseyside.

Is Marc Guehi Liverpool’s best option?

Guehi enhanced his reputation massively with an excellent performance at this summer’s European Championship with England.

However, it does seem faintly ludicrous that Crystal Palace have been turning down huge bids of up to £65m for the centre-back.

Alan Pardew has claimed that Guehi has ‘phenomenal pace‘ but for a defender, the former Chelsea academy graduate is a little on the small side.

Standing at just 5 feet 11 inches, Guehi would be dwarfed next to Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. Although that’s no real indication of his ability, we personally wouldn’t be spending that kind of sum on such a small centre-back.

A move for someone like Goncalo Inacio may make more sense if Liverpool do end up losing Gomez as well as Van den Berg. Either way, the Reds look set for a busy end to the window.
