Increasingly likely Liverpool can knock down price on ‘outstanding’ La Liga player and he wants to join

The wait for a new signing at Liverpool this summer looks to be edging towards a coclusion.

It has been an exceptionally quiet time for the Reds in the transfer market, with no new business done at all.

As the new Premier League season moves ever closer, though, Liverpool finally look to be kicking into gear.

Arne Slot has had time to work with his first-team squad and looks like he’s come to some decisions over which areas may need strengthening.

And with the Liverpool owners notoriously careful when it comes to spending big, they’ll be pleased to hear some news out of Spain regarding one known target.

Liverpool waiting for Giorgi Mamardashvili price drop

There have been claims that Liverpool are looking to Spain and Italy for new signings this summer. Richard Hughes’ knowledge of both markets is driving that interest.

So far, this has led to Liverpool pushing to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. But the 25-year-old is not the only player the Reds are known to be targeting from La Liga.

As Zubimendi decides whether he wants to join Liverpool or not, it has been reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano that the Reds have spoken about signing Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia.

According to Romano, Liverpool have spoken to agents about buying Mamardashvili before sending him on-loan. The 23-year-old goalkeeper is said to be very keen and open to this arrangement.

And according to Spanish outlet Superdeporte, Liverpool are indeed in ‘pole position’ to take Mamardashvili away from Valencia.

They claim that owing to some financial difficulties the La Liga side have, the Reds know they can push the asking-price for the Georgia international lower and lower.

Valencia are said to have initially been looking for around £38m to let Mamardashvili go this summer.

However, as there have been no takers at that price, it’s said to be growing more and more likely that they’ll have to let the ‘keeper go for much less than they’d like to.

What would Giorgi Mamardashvili signing mean?

Given the strength of the reports, it seems as though there is at least some interest from Liverpool in Mamardashvili. In our opinion, this is more than a little strange.

The Georgian looks like a very good goalkeeper – one Ange Postecoglou called ‘outstanding’ on ITV – that is not the issue. If the Reds can get him for a good price, then maybe that is one of the ‘opportunities’ Hughes was referring to earlier in the window.

However, we just don’t see the logic behind signing him. If Liverpool are planning for life after Alisson, then surely Caoimhin Kelleher should be first in line to take over from him.

Granted, Caoimhin may not be willing to wait a year or two to and want first-team football now, but we can’t see how bringing in a potential No.1 and loaning him out does anyone any favours.

Liverpool would be better of promoting Vitezslav Jaros to back-up and simply assessing the market closer to the time that Alisson looks likely to leave. Intriguing, anyway.
