£45m Liverpool player isn’t going to be happy with his role this season and could leave

Liverpool’s transfer window looks set to be condensed into the final couple of weeks of the summer.

The Reds were ultimately inactive throughout June and July for various different reasons.

One of the key factors behind the lack of activity was that Arne Slot wanted to get a good look at what he currently has in the Liverpool squad.

Another was that with so many players away during Euro 2024 and the Copa America, Slot and his coaching staff were unable to do that very effectively.

With everyone now back at the AXA Training Centre and preparing for the season, though, the new head coach has reportedly made his decisions, and not everyone is happy.

Joe Gomez unhappy with potential Liverpool role

As we move into the last three weeks of the transfer window, several things have become clear about how Slot sees this version of Liverpool.

First of all, the Dutchman has clearly decided that the Reds need a new midfielder, hence Liverpool are trying to sign Martin Zubimendi.

Another conclusion that appears to have been drawn is that Joe Gomez is potentially transferable.

Gomez had a very good season for Liverpool but was rarely utilised in his favourite, central role in defence.

And with Liverpool agreeing to sell Gomez to Newcastle for £45m in June before the Magpies pulled the plug, it’s fairly clear that the Reds would perhaps be open to selling the 27-year-old.

Now, according to journalist Graeme Bailey, other interest still remains in Gomez and it’s possible that the England man will not be happy with the role that has been set out for him at Anfield.

“I still don’t think Joe Gomez will be happy to play fourth choice and we do know there’s interest from Aston Villa and a few teams, so that will be an interesting one,” Bailey exclusively tells Rousing The Kop.

“We’ll have to see what he thinks, there is interest there. It’s one of those that if he pushes to go then Liverpool will let him go.”

Joe Gomez yet to decide future

With so little time left before Liverpool kick off their Premier League campaign, it would be nice to have the futures of the likes of Gomez sorted.

On the one hand, you could understand if the former Charlton youngster were leaning towards an exit from Liverpool.

He’s won the lot with the Reds and after nine years could feel it’s time for a new challenge.

As he does appear to be fourth-choice centre-back at Liverpool now, there may yet be a team – like Villa – who come in and offer him the first-team football he craves.

As Bailey says, if a deal suits Liverpool and Gomez wants it, it still feels like something that could happen.
