Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League win over AC Milan has gone down in history as one of the best finals of the competition ever.

Steven Gerrard produced a masterclass to help the Reds defeat the Italian giants 3-2 on penalties in Istanbul.

Trent Alexander-Arnold says Gerrard is better than Mohamed Salah, although both players are hugely admired by the Liverpool fans.

Lucas Leiva named Gerrard as his best Liverpool teammate, with the duo having played in midfield together for many years.

The former came alive that night in Turkey, scoring an equaliser to help inspire a stunning 3-3 comeback in normal time.

The official Champions League Instagram account has now shared footage of his goal, writing the caption: ‘Captain fantastic.’

Gerrard himself shared the footage on his Instagram story, while two of his teammates who started the match have also reminisced.

Heroic goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek commented on the post with a love heart, while Spanish icon Luis Garcia wrote: ‘What a player, what a night.’

Liverpool have, of course, enjoyed another Champions League victory since that memorable night in Istanbul.

Following in Rafa Benitez’s footsteps, Jurgen Klopp guided the Reds to European glory in the 2018/19 season.

The UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup was also won in 2019, in what was a stunning year for the club.

New Liverpool manager Arne Slot won’t have such grand ambitions, but a successful return to Europe’s top tier should be on his mind.

And he has Klopp to thank for giving him a helping hand, with the Merseyside club back in the Champions League this season.

Fans would love another European trophy, but perhaps getting out of the group stages is a more realistic aim given it is Slot’s debut campaign at Anfield.
