Some truly amazing footballers passed through Liverpool during the Jurgen Klopp era.

Throughout almost nine years of Klopp’s management, the Reds saw some of their best ever players feature for the club.

One who deserves a little mention within that is Lucas Leiva. Having been at the club when Klopp arrived, Lucas spent less than two years under the German. However, that was the end of a ten-year spell at Anfield for the Brazilian.

Although he was never as celebrated as many of his teammates across the years, Lucas is a notable player in the club’s history for reaching the decade-long milestone of service.

He would be the first to admit that there have been better players than he on those teams, though. And having played with Liverpool stars spanning right from the Rafa Benitez era all the way to Klopp, Lucas has now named the very best of the bunch.

Lucas names Steven Gerrard as best Liverpool teammate

There was a time when Lucas certainly was one of Liverpool’s best players. Sir Kenny Dalglish absolutely loved Lucas during his time in charge, for example.

But by and large, the 37-year-old was the support act for whoever he was sharing the midfield with.

During his early years at the club, that was completely understandable. Arriving as a young player from Brazil in January 2007, Lucas walked into ‘the best midfield in the world.’ Xabi Alonso, Momo Sissoko, Gerrard and Mascherano-o-o as the song goes.

In later years came luminaries like Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez and even Sadio Mane. Huge names in recent Liverpool – and general football – history.

Asked to name the best Liverpool player he ever shared a dressing room with by GOAL, though, Lucas opted for captain fantastic, Steven Gerrard.

“Easy question,” he admitted. “Probably Stevie.”

However, the former Brazil international did go on to name three other players as honourable mentions.

“I played with so many,” says Lucas. “Suarez as well, and Torres and [Philippe] Coutinho. But Stevie is up there, up there with the best.”

Steven Gerrard earns Trent Alexander-Arnold praise

For those lucky enough to have lived through the whole of Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool career, no one will be arguing with Lucas here.

From start to finish, Gerrard was destined to be a Liverpool legend. In fairness, the former No.8 even transcends that status at Anfield. He is nothing short of an icon.

One man who perhaps wishes he could have shared a field with the great man is Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Nevertheless, Trent knew just how good Stevie was. Alexander-Arnold recently suggested that Gerrard is the best played in Liverpool history. He even picked the Scouser over current teammates Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

In reality, there is no question. Other top players have come and gone since Gerrard hung up his boots, but there’ll never be another like Stevie G.
