Mohamed Salah has steadily risen up the ranks in Liverpool’s illustrious pantheon of club greats.

When the Egyptian first arrived at the club back in 2017, few would have foreseen just how big a player he would become for the Reds.

Salah was on the back of a good couple of years at Roma, but it’s worth remembering that Jurgen Klopp was pushing to bring Julian Brandt to Anfield rather than the former Chelsea forward.

Thankfully, the decision to sign Salah instead is one that paid off almost instantly for Liverpool and has continued to do so ever since.

Now entering his eighth season with the Reds, Salah has earned the right to be called one of the best players in Liverpool history. However, according to Trent Alexander-Arnold, he is not yet number one on that list.

Trent Alexander- Arnold makes Steven Gerrard point

For those who have played with him, you rarely hear a bad word said about Salah. His professionalism whilst around the AXA Training Centre is phenomenal.

And come matchday, the 32-year-old has showed his class time and time again.

If there’s anyone who should know just how good Salah is, then it’s Alexander-Arnold. The Liverpool academy graduate has formed a brilliant partnership on the right-wing with Mo over the past seven years.

Alexander-Arnold recently named Salah as the best he’s ever played with, too. He is will aware of the quality of Liverpool’s No.11.

But according to Trent, his teammate can still not match the legacy woven by legendary captain Steven Gerrard at Anfield.

Engaged in a game of ‘Winner stays on’ with Mirror Football, Alexander-Arnold was asked to pick between a number of iconic Reds and former Reds.

First up was perhaps the ultimate question for Liverpool fans: Sir Kenny Dalglish or Gerrard? Trent, far from being old enough to have watched Kenny play, opts for Stevie G.

The vice-captain then picks Gerrard over Ian Rush, John Barnes, Luis Suarez and Graeme Souness before being faced with the choice of the Scouser or Salah.

“Steven Gerrard,” says Trent, without a hint of hesitation. Asked the same question about Virgil van Dijk, the 25-year-old is quick to pick the former captain over the current once again.

How close is Mohamed Salah to Gerrard legacy?

In our opinion, Alexander-Arnold is absolutely bang on here. For us, Dalglish is the only one who can come close to the conversation with Gerrard, but like Trent, we didn’t see the King play.

Being a local lad should perhaps not be taken into the equation, but it’s so impressive to do what Gerrard did at Liverpool after breaking through the academy. There will truly never be another Stevie G.

As for Salah, it will be near-on impossible for him to match Gerrard’s legacy from here.

In terms of scoring goals, Mo is up there with the greatest ever for Liverpool. But now likely into his final season with the Reds, he won’t get close to the current Al Ettifaq manager.

Should he sign another contract and continuing scoring at a unbelievable rate, he can certainly help his cause. Whatever Salah does though, you simply can’t beat Ste.
