Liverpool’s mystery midfield target may well be ‘special’ player who they tried to sign before

Liverpool look to be on the verge of making their first signing of the summer transfer window.

The Reds have so far been especially quiet in the market as Arne Slot assesses the squad he has inherited.

However, with their pre-season tour of the USA now over and the Liverpool squad joining up in full at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday, it’s time for Slot to come to some conclusions.

During the friendly games played so far, it has become obvious that Liverpool may need a new player who is exactly in the mould the head coach wants from a deep-lying midfielder.

And after journalist David Ornstein confirmed Liverpool have identified a target for the role, we think we know who it could be.

Andre Trindade must be Liverpool’s midfield target

These are exciting times for Liverpool supporters. After seeing the tumbleweed drift through Anfield all summer long, things look like they’re about to get interesting.

Fans have been crying out for an elite No.6 ever since Fabinho left last year. It feels like they might be about to get their wish.

The fact that the Reds need a top quality defensive midfielder was underlined again on Tuesday, with Moises Caicedo speaking about rejecting Liverpool once again.

And as things prepare to move into turbo mode in the market, we could see the Reds coming back in for another top target from last year: Andre Trindade.

Liverpool made an offer for Andre before they even went in for Caicedo. However, the Brazilian was keen to stay at Fluminense and win the Copa Libertadores, which he eventually did.

This year, it had seemed inevitable that Andre would move. However, strong interest from Fulham has so far come to nothing.

Liverpool clearly rate Andre very highly and were recently mentioned yet again by Fluminense president Mario Bittencout.

After snubbing the Reds’ interest for an even greater cause 12 months ago, the coast now looks clear for Andre to finally get his dream move.

Coast clear for Liverpool and Andre

The one caveat to Liverpool’s interest in Andre is that it did obviously come under a different recruitment team last year.

Nevertheless, chief Liverpool scout Barry Hunter has been in South America in the lead up to the transfer window and was one of those who was in place at Anfield last year.

Consequently, we don’t think the Reds’ appreciation of a player who journalist Fabrizio Romano deemed to be ‘special‘ will have gone anywhere.

Andre could be bought for around £29m which would also be very much doable for Liverpool. He ticks a lot of boxes.

With a lack of concrete links to work from, it is difficult to predict who the Reds have indeed targeted to be their first signing of the summer. But we wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Andre come to the forefront again.
