‘Special’ player is now expected to leave in January, after links to Liverpool

As January looms ever nearer, the rumour mill is starting to whir into life for Liverpool.

With injuries currently hitting them hard in defence, the Reds have been linked with a number of potential additions. Fulham’s Antonee Robinson is the latest to supposedly be on Jurgen Klopp’s radar.

But there’s also another position that Klopp could do with strengthening – defensive midfield. And, ironically, what they do there could also be dependent on Fulham.

Ever since the summer, Liverpool have been credited with a strong interest in Fluminense midfielder Andre Trindade. But with the Reds’ desire to recruit him said to have cooled of late, the Cottagers are reportedly leading the race.

Today, The Athletic have checked in on how the battle to sign Andre in the New Year is going. Happily for both Fulham and Liverpool, they claim that a ‘source close to the player’ has anonymously declared that the 22-year-old is expecting to be on the move in January.

No further update is given as of yet, only that Marco Silva’s side are interested and that they’ll face ‘strong competition’ from unnamed teams.

Andre expecting to leave

There’s every chance that what Andre is or isn’t doing in the transfer market is of no concern to Liverpool.

The Reds reportedly called Fluminense about signing the Brazil international in the summer. But having been rebuffed then, their interest seems to have cooled – or even disappeared completely.

So, this may in face have nothing to do with Liverpool.

Nevertheless, we can’t help but feel that the Reds may have a say in things yet. Andre clearly had his head turned by a potential move to Anfield in the summer. It would be strange if now that he’s on the market, Liverpool are nowhere to be seen.

Having said that, reinforcement in defensive midfield no longer feels like the priority that it did in the summer.

Wataru Endo has started to find his feet while Alexis Mac Allister has proven himself to be a reliable option, too.

Despite that though, you do get the impression that bringing in a proven, top holding midfielder could make all the difference for Liverpool this season. Having been described as ‘special’ by journalist Fabrizio Romano [Here We Go Podcast], Andre could be that player.

Personally though, we’re not sure we can see them doing a deal for the Flu man or anyone else. It would be a shift in strategy for Klopp to load up a position he seems currently happy with. But if they do change their mind, Andre is right there. There’s still time.
