Curtis Jones spotted giving interesting three-word verdict about Dominik Szoboszlai after Arsenal friendly

Liverpool players are quickly getting used to what Arne Slot is expecting from them on the pitch.

The Reds have now played three games under their new head coach, while many have trained with Slot for a month.

Although many of the ideas built under Jurgen Klopp remain the same or similar, there have certainly been some new methods imparted to the Liverpool squad this summer.

And as Slot assesses where best to use the players he has inherited at Anfield, we have already seen some very interesting tweaks and changes during matches.

One of those has included playing Dominik Szoboszlai in a deeper-lying midfield role. Slot thinks Szoboszlai can do it, and Curtis Jones has now given his own verdict, too.

It is set to be a big season at Liverpool for Szoboszlai. After a great start in his debut campaign with the club last season, the 23-year-old faded poorly towards the end of it.

Nevertheless, Szoboszlai has hailed the training sessions under Slot and the hope will be that system of the new head coach will suit him a little more.

For that to happen, though, perhaps the Hungarian needs to sort out his best position first.

There has been talk that Liverpool have been trialling Szoboszlai as a forward in training while he played as the most advanced midfielder during the Reds’ first friendly against Real Betis.

For Thursday’s clash with Arsenal, Liverpool’s No.8 was pushed back as one of the two sitting midfielders. After a composed performance, we think Szoboszlai proved that he can be a No.6 for Liverpool.

And as spotted by cameras during LFCTV’s ‘Inside’ video of the game, Jones may agree. The Scouser was seen arm in arm with Szoboszlai on the pitch at the end of the match.

Spotting the camera, Jones decided to make a declaration. “Hey!” said the midfielder, before facing the lens full-on. “My number six!” he added, patting Szoboszlai’s chest with a grin.

Realising what was being said about him, Dom laughs heartily before pushing Jones’ arm from his shoulders.

Where will Szoboszlai play under Slot?

Szoboszlai’s versatility has been one of the most intriguing aspects of Liverpool’s pre-season so far.

During last season, we rarely saw the former RB Leipzig man do anything different than play as the right-sided No.8 for the Reds.

But having already played in two different roles this summer, it’s clear that there are more strings to his bow than we’ve seen.

It could be that Slot is simply adjusting to the fact that he does not yet have his full Liverpool squad available to him.

However, we do think that given he left Wataru Endo on the bench, the Dutchman is starting to see Szoboszlai as one of his sitting midfielders. We’re fascinated to see where he plays against Man United on Sunday.
