Liverpool are really interested in signing ‘unbelievable’ £45m player but his asking-price has shot up

August simply has to be a busy month for Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

The Reds have waited until the final four weeks of the market’s opening to do any incoming business at all.

The feeling at the moment is that Liverpool will make some signings before the August 30th deadline. However, exactly who they are remains a slight mystery.

For the most part, the Liverpool squad looks very well stocked. Nevertheless, Arne Slot could still do with one or two new options to call upon. The Reds have to refresh a little.

As fans wait with nervous excitement to see who will arrive at Anfield over the coming weeks, there’s one name that simply will not go away in the rumour mill.

Liverpool maintain interest in Anthony Gordon

What Slot should prioritise for Liverpool in the last weeks of the market is perhaps a matter of personal opinion.

Some would still like to see the Reds bring in a top quality No.6. Given that bids are coming in for Wataru Endo, that seems like being a possibility.

It also seems that Liverpool could potentially bring in a new centre-back. Although whether they do could depend on the future of Joe Gomez.

The Liverpool No.2 has been in the news on Wednesday after it emerged that Newcastle almost signed Gomez at the end of June.

Had Gomez have left Anfield, he would have done so in a deal to see Anthony Gordon go the other way.

In the end, Newcastle pulled the plug on the deal. They did not want to lose Gordon and after finding a different way around their PSR troubles, they didn’t go through with things.

Despite that though, there have been reports that Gordon’s head has been turned. And according to the Liverpool ECHO, the Reds ‘maintain strong interest’ in buying the 23-year-old.

Owing to Mohamed Salah entering the final year of his contract and speculation over what will happen with Luis Diaz, Liverpool are reportedly still keen on Gordon.

However, it’s also claimed that the England international’s asking-price is now likely to be ‘elevated’ following Newcastle solving their PSR problems.

How much would Anthony Gordon cost?

Reports from Wednesday have claimed that Liverpool were happy to pay £75m for Gordon while sending Gomez to Newcastle for £45m.

Given previous claims that Newcastle could ask for £100m to sell Gordon, you can understand why that was appealing to Liverpool.

Nevertheless, with that deal now off the table, perhaps the Magpies will revert to that original asking-price. Bruno Guimaraes called Gordon ‘unbelievable’ recently. So, maybe he’s worth it.

And with the former Everton man having been signed for £45m just 18 months ago, Liverpool were never going to get a bargain on this one. Gordon has just two years left on his deal, though, so the Reds also won’t want to overpay.

This is almost certainly not over just yet, but we still think next summer is more likely for Liverpool and Gordon.
