Premier League club have responded after Liverpool ask about signing their ‘unbelievable’ player

Liverpool’s transfer activity remains a little bit of a mystery this summer.

The Reds are now the only Premier League club yet to make a first-team signing ahead of the new campaign.

There are good reasons for that. Arne Slot has wanted to take a proper look at the Liverpool squad before deciding what might be best to add to it.

It’s also true that the Reds have a fairly large group at the moment, well supplemented by academy players who can help out if needs be.

Nevertheless, Slot claimed on Thursday that it would be a ‘surprise’ if Liverpool did not make any signing at all before the window closes on August the 30th.

Liverpool back in talks over Anthony Gordon

With around five weeks left in the market, there is no need for anyone at Liverpool to panic just yet.

The Reds owners are always methodical in their approach to recruitment anyway and they certainly won’t be doing anything just for the sake of it.

Nevertheless, if anything is to happen for Liverpool, then it surely needs to start being properly formalised over the next couple of weeks.

Slot has had more than three weeks to work with his squad now and has also overseen two 90 minute matches. Although Liverpool are still waiting for big players to return, that should be enough.

And according to Caught Offside, the Reds are indeed trying to ramp up a big move from the Premier League.

They claim that the Reds have come back for talks with Newcastle over the transfer of Anthony Gordon.

Gordon was offered to Liverpool as Newcastle struggled to meet PSR regulations at the end of June. However, the Reds did not want to move forward at that time.

Now, though, it’s claimed that they have ‘begun renegotiating’ with the Magpies for Gordon. But Newcastle are reportedly not having it. It’s claimed that Eddie Howe and his club have ‘made clear’ that the 23-year-old is not for sale.

Instead, Newcastle are said to be keen on tying Gordon down to a new, additional three-year contract which would run until 2029. Talks will reportedly begin ‘shortly’ over the extension, although Liverpool, Man United and Chelsea continue to lurk.

Still a chance for Liverpool and Anthony Gordon

This is a transfer saga which feels unlikely to go away until Gordon either joins Liverpool or signs a new deal at Newcastle.

With Gordon desperate to join the Reds it would seem likely that if Liverpool’s interest remains into the future, he will one day move to Anfield.

As the Reds have a couple of really good options on the left of their attack already, it seems like this is possibly not the right time former Everton man at Liverpool anyway.

But according to journalist David Lynch, there is still a chance that Gordon joins Liverpool before the August deadline.

Newcastle clearly don’t want to lose player, though, which is an understandable position. Midfielder Bruno Guimaraes called Gordon ‘unbelievable‘ while he was awarded the Magpies’ player of the year award.
