Four Liverpool players have the chance to become continental champions with their countries this weekend.

It has been a largely mixed time for Reds at the European Championship, but two players could yet win the whole thing.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez are likely to start Sunday’s big game against Spain from the bench, but will be dreaming of success with England.

Meanwhile, the Copa America has been a much greater success for participating members of the Liverpool squad.

Things came to a head on Thursday morning, when Luis Diaz and Colombia knocked Darwin Nunez’s Uruguay out in the semi-final.

Luis Diaz consoles Darwin Nunez

Nunez had a good Copa America with Uruguay. However, the Liverpool striker failed to score in their final three games.

After two goals in the first two matches of the tournament, it had looked like Nunez could be gearing up to fire his country to a first title since 2011.

But it simply wasn’t to be for Uruguay, who came up against a Colombia side on a phenomenal 28-game unbeaten run.

It was a tight game in which Diaz played well for Colombia. But the real talking point of the match happened once the final whistle had blown.

Worryingly, video captured Colombia fans clashing violently with Uruguayan players. Nunez was in the thick of it, attempting to land punches and taking some, too.

While scenes like that should never happen at a football match, there was a much more wholesome moment on the pitch.

Whether it’s before or after the clash with supporters is unclear, but Diaz was spotted consoling his Liverpool teammate Nunez at full-time.

Diaz and Nunez are close friends and it will have hurt Lucho to see his Reds teammate upset. No hard feelings here.

Luis Diaz sets up Alexis Mac Allister date

Liverpool are now guaranteed to have a first Copa America winner return to the Anfield since 2019. Five years ago, Alisson Becker and Roberto Firmino lifted the title with Brazil.

Half a decade on, and it will be either Diaz or Alexis Mac Allister who make their way back to Merseyside as champions of the Americas.

With both players being key for their countries, it will be well worth a watch for Liverpool fans.

Unfortunately, there may be similar scenes to what we see here. One Red will likely be consoling another at full-time in Miami.

However, we’ll also get to see either Diaz or Mac Allister be the toast of their nation and lift the giant Copa America trophy.
