Rio Ferdinand shares who he thinks is better… Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk or Ronald Koeman

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is currently impressing on the big stage, with the centre-back shining at Euro 2024.

The Netherlands captain has guided his nation into the semi-finals of the competition, with England up next.

France and Spain meet in the other semi-final in Germany, with the former having been in the same group as the Netherlands.

Liverpool skipper Van Dijk will have moved on from that tricky group stage, with his country having finished in third place with four points.

But it was enough to land a knockout place, with the Netherlands then making it past Romania and Turkey.

Rio Ferdinand chooses between Virgil van Dijk and Ronald Koeman

Van Dijk has been crucial to their progress, as has his Liverpool teammate Cody Gakpo, who has been impressing Gary Neville.

The pundit’s former Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand has now been tasked with ranking the top centre-backs from European Championship history, with Van Dijk unsurprisingly featuring.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Ferdinand was given the unenviable task of choosing between the Liverpool centre-back and his current international manager Ronald Koeman.

Having only just ranked the Netherlands boss over himself, Ferdinand opted to pick Koeman over Van Dijk, saying: ‘Hmm, probably go Koeman again still.’

Ferdinand may upset Liverpool fans with his latest comments, but the BBC pundit also ranked Koeman over Spain legend Sergio Ramos, before finally settling on Paolo Maldini.

The Manchester United icon had stuck with the former Real Madrid centre-back for some time, ranking him above the likes of Carles Puyol, Giorgio Chiellini and Fabio Cannavaro.

Van Dijk won’t be paying much attention to the rankings, although he will be doing his utmost to follow in the footsteps of Koeman.

The duo are now working closely together in order to try and bring the Euro 2024 trophy home, although the Three Lions should provide a tough test up next.

Van Dijk’s fellow Reds ace Gakpo played another key role in the latest win over Turkey, with the former reacting to the latter on Instagram after the quarter-final clash.
