Cody Gakpo certainly needed time to prove himself to Liverpool fans, having endured a stuttering start to his Anfield career.

The attacker joined the Reds from PSV in January 2023, on the back of his impressive displays at the 2022 World Cup.

He was, however, forced by Jurgen Klopp to adopt unfamiliar roles during his early time at Liverpool, largely due to injuries.

Still, the forward netted seven goals during his first campaign on Merseyside, all of which arrived in the Premier League.

Gakpo then followed that up with 16 goals in all competitions last time out, as he became a key figure for Liverpool in Klopp’s final season.

Cody Gakpo raves over Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold

The 25-year-old now looks very comfortable in red, and has taken that form into Euro 2024 with the Netherlands.

Gakpo found the back of the net in his nation’s opener against Poland, although he was left angered at being substituted with just under 10 minutes remaining.

He will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on his Liverpool teammates who remain in the competition, one of which is Trent Alexander-Arnold.

And Gakpo has now waxed lyrical over the England man, picking Alexander-Arnold for his passing when building his ‘ultimate’ player for ESPN.

Another Anfield icon was selected by the Netherlands star when it came to endurance, with former Liverpool player James Milner getting the nod.

Cody Gakpo set for key role under Arne Slot

New Liverpool manager Arne Slot will be looking to form a close bond with Gakpo at Anfield when the player returns for pre-season.

The boss has already spoken to compatriot Virgil van Dijk, with Slot joining a strong Netherlands contingent on Merseyside.

Ryan Gravenberch, who is also with the nation at Euro 2024, should also link up well with Slot, while young defender Sepp van den Berg should return to Anfield following his loan with Mainz.

Gakpo will be fully focused on taking the Netherlands as far as possible in Germany, having already netted twice at the competition.

A disappointing third place finish was secured in Group D, but it was enough to earn a round of 16 meeting with Romania.
