Liverpool are about to make some big decisions behind closed doors next month

It’s all set to be a big end to the season for Liverpool, with two further trophies still up for grabs.

With Jurgen Klopp’s side going so well on the pitch though, there’s plenty still to decide off it. Steps have been taken to secure football operations moving forward, with Michael Edwards returning and Richard Hughes coming in below him.

And the pair have plenty to give them busy, that’s for sure. As well as deciding on a successor for Klopp, Edwards and Hughes need to clear up what’s happening with three big contracts on the playing staff.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk all have just over a year left on their deals. Now is the time for things to get sorted. And thankfully, it sounds like Liverpool are finally getting themselves ready.

Liverpool set for big April

Settling on Klopp’s successor is obviously the most pressing matter here. But at the same time, the three contracts cannot be put off or ignored.

Over the years, Liverpool fans have become used to their club being one of the best ran in Europe. As a result, it feels a little strange to be in a position where there seems to be so much left to do and so little time in which to do it.

However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, it may actually be that the Reds are well on their way to knowing exactly what’s happening.

Speaking on The Debrief podcast, Jacobs claimed that Liverpool will ‘privately’ be putting their plans in motion over the next weeks.

“I think that by the time we get into mid or late April, even if it’s not public, because of how Liverpool work, they’ll know exactly where they stand with the likes of Salah, Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold,” the reported explained.

“And there may be speculation right up until when the window opens and afterwards but I think privately by the end of April at least Liverpool will know exactly where they stand, because they always have a plan. They never do anything at the last minute. So, April’s going to be a big month even if what happens in April, as with Klopp, doesn’t become public until a few months later.”

What do Liverpool need to do

Several weeks ago, there might have been a faint level of panic setting in for Liverpool supporters. Without a sporting director and a manager for the summer, the future looked uncertain.

Since then though, things now seem a lot rosier. The appointments of Edwards and Hughes are massive and mean that the decision makers at Liverpool are experienced, thoughtful and have a track-record of success. That’s important.

Now that the pair are on board, the search for a new manager should be accelerated. You’d imagine that contract talks with Trent, Salah and Van Dijk are also set to commence. Beyond that, Edwards, Hughes and FSG also have the small matter of a summer transfer window to contend with.

The wheels could easily have come off, but it looks like Liverpool are in safe hands once again. Roll on April!
