Michael Edwards is back at Liverpool. His return is great news. However, when he ultimately does take on his new role at FSG, he will have plenty of work ahead of him.

Not only does he need to play a role in the recruitment of the club’s new manager, he also has to appoint a sporting director for Liverpool to work alongside him. Having taken on a role that is now going to be the head of football operations at FSG, Edwards will also participate and help FSG expand its portfolio in the football world.

Above all though, there are other important matters to sort out in the Liverpool squad as well. Not only will there be a crucial transfer window for the club this summer, with targets to seek out, but Edwards must also consider who to tie down to new contracts. There are quite a few whose current deals are close to expiring and who Edwards now needs to make important decisions about.

Peter Moore on Liverpool’s contract situation

Former Liverpool CEO, Peter Moore, who worked alongside Michael Edwards at Liverpool until he left his position in 2020, has been speaking on talkSPORT today.

Moore discussed, among other matters, who he thinks Michael Edwards now needs to make decisions on in terms of their futures at the club, and who must be tied down to new contracts. Moore named three players in particular. Those three players included Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“You want your captain to be tied down,” Moore said. “You want your global superstar Mohamed Salah to be tied down and you want your local scouser [Trent Alexander-Arnold], from West Derby to be tied down. Those are the three players that are up for bids.”

It’s hard to disagree with Moore. We would love to see Liverpool keep all three of the aforementioned players. They are not only instrumental to Liverpool’s success on the pitch, but they’re also leading senior figures in the Liverpool dressing room as well.
