Liverpool had a number of star performers as they destroyed Sparta Prague in the Europa League last night.

With the goals flying in early, youngsters like Bobby Clark were really standing out. Darwin Nunez was another to make his mark on the game and was rightfully praised after the game.

Another man to really make a difference for Liverpool was two goal hero Cody Gakpo. It has been a slightly difficult period for Gakpo who continues to find himself more out of the team than in it.

But the Dutchman took his chance last night, burying two goals including a clever flicked finish from Harvey Elliott’s shot.

And after the game, Gakpo took to Instagram to express his delight at the brace. “God’s power,” wrote the 24-year-old. “Into the UEL quarter-finals!”

Wataru Endo was one of those to commend Gakpo, commenting with a ‘praise’ emoji as well as adding some flames. Others like Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenberch and Elliott were also in there hailing their teammate.

Gakpo gets timely brace

Gakpo has had a bit of a funny season with Liverpool. On the one hand, he now has 12 goals and has contributed towards the Reds maintaining their push on all fronts.

But on the other, fans have often been left wanting much more from the Netherlands international.

In and out of the starting XI, perhaps it’s understandable that Gakpo has been as patchy as he has. However, it’s fair to say that the former PSV Eindhoven forward hasn’t always taken his chance when given a run in the side either.

Still, it has certainly been more good than bad. Gakpo was a driving force in the Carabao Cup in particular and Liverpool wouldn’t be where they are this season without him.

It’s also worth mentioning that aside from a small issue in September, Gakpo has stayed fit and available throughout the whole season.

With so many of his teammates going down with fitness problems, that shouldn’t be taken for granted. 41 appearances already this season is impressive.

Heading into last night though, Gakpo was without a goal in five games. Against already beaten opposition, it was a good chance for him to return to the scoresheet.

Thankfully, Cody managed it. He should probably have ended the game with a hat-trick, but we’ll let that one slide for now. Hopefully a step in the right direction heading into a big end to the campaign.
