Darwin Nunez did something ‘really special’ when Liverpool were 4-0 up against Sparta Prague

Liverpool had the game in the bag within quarter of an hour of last night’s game against Sparta Prague.

With 14 minutes on the clock, the Reds had scored four times. Despite already holding a four goal lead from the first-leg, there was no let-up from Liverpool.

The mentality of Jurgen Klopp’s side to go and get more goals was praised by Sparta manager Brian Priske after the game. And analysing the game for LFCTV, former Liverpool Women striker Natasha Dowie hailed Reds forward Darwin Nunez for leading the charge.

Nunez bagged the first goal of the game to set Liverpool on their way. And according to Dowie, the 24-year-old was setting the tone from thereon in.

“A big thing that actually stood out for me, there was one moment in the game when we were 4-0 up, Nunez has tracked back, got the crowd going, that’s 4-0 up. The game’s done and dusted. You can’t teach that kind of mentality and I think this is where we’ve got a really special team and really special individual players,” said the 35-year-old.

Nunez sets the tone for Liverpool

If you’re looking for a player to relax into a game and simply keep things ticking over, then Nunez is not your man.

The Uruguayan is an absolute bundle of energy at the best of times. Sensing the potential to add more goals to his season’s tally, he started the game like a house on fire last night.

Although he drew a blank last weekend against Manchester City, his early goal was Nunez’s sixth in his last six games. He’s in terrific form.

Nevertheless, we still did also see a side to the former Benfica man that we’d like to see a little less of yesterday.

Having had the ball put on a plate by Mohamed Salah less than six yards out, Nunez somehow got his finish all wrong and ballooned the ball over the crossbar.

Obviously, it didn’t matter against Sparta, the game was already well won. But it did signify that for all his recent progress, Darwin is still prone to these lapses in concentration.

As Dowie mentions though, you really can’t question the No.9’s mentality. He keeps pushing, keeps cajoling and never lets the opposition rest. You’ve either got that or you haven’t and Darwin has it in spades.

Lesser players would surely have crumbled under the scrutiny Nunez has faced since arriving in 2022. Instead, Darwin is getting even better.

That’s the mentality that has led the Anfield crowd to take him to their hearts compeltely. They respond to Nunez and Nunez responds to them.
