Liverpool will have regrets about last weekend. Jurgen Klopp’s side will feel they should have beaten Manchester City. The Reds dominated the game, limited Pep Guardiola’s team to just a few chances, and created plenty of their own.
In total Liverpool had 19 shots, the highest Pep Guardiola has ever faced against an opponent in the Premier League. That alone is impressive. However, when you consider the personnel who were involved and the key players missing Liverpool’s feat becomes even more impressive.
The Reds’ squad for the Manchester City game included four recent academy graduates in Lewis Koumas, James McConnell, Bobby Clark and Amara Nallo. The latter is just 17-years-old and hasn’t even made his debut for Liverpool’s first team.
Meanwhile, in the starting XI, there were three more academy graduates in Caoimhin Kelleher, Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah. The latter two have played just 15 games combined in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Kelleher has featured in seven this season.
Kornel Misciur in Liverpool squad
But it wasn’t just those players. There were others who were involved in the squad but didn’t make the bench. One of those was 16-year-old Kornel Misciur. As seen above he was included in Liverpool’s squad and entered Anfield with the team, but in the end he was not named in the final squad.
Misciur was selected as Liverpool’s third choice goalkeeper for the match. It’s brilliant recognition for the young goalkeeper, who only arrived at Liverpool last summer.
Misciur is highly rated by the club’s academy staff. He has made 18 appearances for the Reds so far. All of them have come at U18 level. He’s still yet to debut for the club’s U21 team – making this call-up to the first team all the more impressive.
Liverpool have a knack for developing top level goalkeepers. Misciur is definitely a name to follow.
