Who people in football currently feel Xabi Alonso is more likely to join… Liverpool or Bayern Munich

Liverpool continue to face competition from Bayern Munich for first-choice managerial candidate Xabi Alonso.

Both Bayern and Liverpool are looking for a new manager as they prepare to lose Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp respectively.

In the midst of a brilliant season with Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso has emerged as the preferred candidate of the two teams. So far, reports have contrasted over which of his former teams the Spaniard would prefer to take over.

But according to The Independent’s ‘Reading the Game’ newsletter, the feeling within football is relatively clear. They claim that although there have been reports that Alonso wants to join Bayern, this is viewed as ‘posturing’ within the industry.

Although the noise from Munich is reportedly much louder than anything coming from Liverpool, this is not necessarily ‘influential.’

Instead, the feeling within the game is said to be that Alonso is still more likely to end up at Anfield than the Allianz Arena. However, it is also stressed that nothing has yet been agreed.

Alonso more likely to join Liverpool than Bayern

It isn’t a surprise that Liverpool have maintained a virtual silence over their attempt to lure Alonso back to Merseyside.

The Reds are well used to doing things in silence where recruitment is concerned. Just because you don’t hear about it, it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

Nevertheless, there have still been claims that Liverpool have been in contact with Alonso about taking over next season. The wheels do look like they’re in motion.

And now, with The Athletic claiming yesterday that they have just about sorted their sporting director position, you can believe that Liverpool will be preparing to ramp things up.

In a somewhat surprising move, it looks like former Anfield transfer guru Michael Edwards is set to return in a wider-ranging role.

With Edwards heading up all football operations at Liverpool, he looks set to bring in Richard Hughes as his choice for sporting director.

These two appointments show that the Reds are absolutely serious about maintaining the way they do things. Even with Klopp, they aren’t going to change tack.

As one of the brightest young coaches in the game, surely Alonso would be excited at the possibility of working with Edwards and Hughes.

Of course, the pull of Munich should not be underestimated. But for structure, squad and the potential to build something special, it’s hard to see how they can top Liverpool right now.
