Liverpool have reportedly made contact with Xabi Alonso’s agent over a potential move, with the Bayer Leverkusen coach wanted by the Reds.
The former Anfield midfielder has emerged as the number one option for Liverpool to replace Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season, with Alonso working miracles at Leverkusen in the last 18 months.
The 42-year-old coach has transformed the German club from a potential relegation candidate to the first Bundesliga champions not named Bayern Munich in well over a decade.

And according to journalist Christian Falk, Liverpool have now requested to speak to Alonso’s agent, Inaki Ibanez, with the Reds looking to speed up their pursuit of the Basque coach.
With Bayern also on the hunt for a new manager, Liverpool will need to act fast if they’re to beat the reigning German champions to Alonso’s signature later this summer.
However, as per Falk, Leverkusen are confident that Alonso will reject Liverpool’s offer to take over this year, with expectations growing that the young coach could remain with the Bundesliga side.
Indeed, Alonso staying with Leverkusen would be quite the twist given how big the Liverpool job is, and the Reds might soon have to pull off all the stops if they’re to bring their former midfielder back to Anfield.
Liverpool might need to crank up the pressure to land their man

Alonso was viewed as the favourite to replace Klopp the second news broke that the German manager will be leaving his post at Liverpool after nearly a decade of success.
Yet the chase for Alonso has been harder than first thought, with Bayern entering the competition and the real prospect that the Basque coach stay at Leverkusen now entering the fray.
And for Liverpool, they will need to crank up the pressure if they’re to land their man, with time running out if the Reds are to secure Alonso’s signature in the coming weeks.
