Liverpool are still on the lookout for their new manager as we enter the final two months of the season.
As we’ve known for the past six weeks or so, Jurgen Klopp will won’t be in charge at Anfield beyond the end of the current campaign. It’s all change for the Reds.
So far, Xabi Alonso appears the most likely man to replace him. The former Liverpool midfielder is having an incredible season with Bayer Leverkusen and is reportedly leaning towards re-joining the club.
But with Bayern Munich also pushing hard to get Alonso, Liverpool are having to consider other options, too.
They may not be the only big Premier League club looking for a new manager, though. With Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag under pressure at Chelsea and Manchester United respectively, both could soon face the sack. And speaking about the potential managerial merry-go-round on The Overlap, Gary Neville put forward a joke scenario involving his former club and Liverpool.
“What’s going to happen is Ten Hag will get sacked by United, Liverpool will appoint him and he’ll win the league for Liverpool!” laughed the pundit. No, thank you.
Neville makes Ten Hag joke
This was quite obviously a joke from Neville. Although Ten Hag may eventually get the sack at Old Trafford, there’s no way he’s heading to Liverpool.
Had the Dutch coach still been at Ajax at this time though, then maybe he would have been considered at Anfield to succeed Klopp.
He may not be the most popular man about right now, but Ten Hag had developed a great reputation back home in the Netherlands.
If he hadn’t, then there’s no chance United would have considered him in the first place. At the time of his appointment in 2022, the 54-year-old was seen as one of the top managers in Europe.
When considering exactly who could continue Klopp’s legacy at Anfield, maybe Ten Hag would have come into the picture. At least to a small degree.

Almost two years on and it’s safe to say that the former Bayern Munich assistant no longer holds that reputation.
He hasn’t done awfully at United, it must be said. Finishing third last season was seen as a success, while he also delivered a first trophy in six years with the Carabao Cup.
But this season, things have taken a turn for the worse. With new owners starting to make changes to the club, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Ten Hag as a casualty of that.
If he is, then it’ll be interesting to see where he winds up next. One thing we do know though, is that it won’t be at Liverpool.
