Liverpool’s battle with Bayern Munich to secure the services of Xabi Alonso looks set to go on.
Alonso has been the favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield ever since the German’s surprise announcement that he’s soon to leave the club.
Meanwhile, Bayern are a little newer to the party, having decided to part ways with Thomas Tuchel only yesterday. Both clubs will need a new manager next season.
And according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg on X this morning, the two European heavyweights have both been in touch with Alonso already.
“Liverpool have also already contacted the management of Xabi Alonso! Just like Bayern!” Plettenberg reports. If Alonso leaves Leverkusen in the summer, it’s currently a race between Liverpool and Bayern.
“At Bayern, they know it will be very difficult to get Alonso. But he remains the absolute desired replacement for Tuchel – as reported!”
Liverpool in touch over Alonso move
It’s good to hear that Liverpool are being proactive in the chase for Alonso. They may have been wanting to do things a little under the radar, but now that another big side are involved that’s gone out of the window.
Instead, the Reds must push ahead as assertively and decisively as possible. Having seemingly decided that Alonso is the man to succeed Klopp, they can’t back down now.
Fortunately, reports from earlier in the week have put the Spanish coach’s current preference as being with Liverpool.
Granted, that was before we knew Bayern would definitely have a vacancy. But still, it’s encouraging.
Being the smart man that he is, Alonso will obviously weigh this decision up very careful. It still wouldn’t be a massive surprise to see him stay at Leverkusen, perhaps.

If he is to leave though, then it’s clear that it will be to one of these, his former clubs. Thankfully, it seems as though the other giant of his playing career – Real Madrid – are staying out of it for now.
From a Liverpool point of view, we’d rather go up against Bayern right now than Real. The Bundesliga champions have become a bit of a mess under Tuchel and are not as attractive as they usually are.
Madrid on the other hand have Kylian Mbappe coming in to join an already star-studded squad and would mean a move back to his homeland for Alonso. That would be a harder battle.
Still, coming up against Bayern is one Liverpool could yet lose, too. Let’s hope things start to become clearer in the Reds’ favour in the coming weeks.
