Liverpool privately think they made an absolutely ‘incredible’ signing last summer

Liverpool had their biggest transfer window for years in 2023, as they brought in four new players.

So far, all four have proven their worth. Things have been a little trickier for Ryan Gravenberch perhaps, but Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have all been brilliant.

The early weeks belonged to Szoboszlai, who wowed fans with his all-action early displays. Moving into winter, it was Endo who stood out, proving just about everybody wrong in the process.

But in recent times, it has been Mac Allister who has really shown his quality. The Argentine has excelled in an unfamiliar No.6 role for most of the season but with Endo now behind him, Macca has been terrific further forward, too.

And writing in his Daily Briefing this morning, journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool are still privately delighted by Mac Allister’s signing last summer.

“My understanding is that Liverpool are super happy with how they handled this important phase of recruitment,” says Romano, of the Reds summer business. “Not just now, but already in September Liverpool felt they did an excellent job. Mac Allister in particular is considered an incredible signing, a bargain considering conditions of the deal.”

Liverpool delight over Mac Allister

At the time, Liverpool’s signing of Mac Allister had looked like the perfect fit. A smart, technical, robust, World Cup winning midfielder for just £35m? What’s not to love.

But as the weeks and months have ticked on, the deal to bring him in from Brighton has started to look like a genuine masterstroke.

Given just how good he’s been since the turn of the year especially, there’s an argument to be had that Mac Allister has been the Premier League’s signing of the season.

Others will perhaps catch the eye more with greater goals and assists. But for the way he has come in and knitted things together in several different roles, we don’t think there’s any better than Liverpool’s No.10. Saturday’s win over Nottingham Forest was the latest example.

At 25, Mac Allister’s best years are still ahead of him, too. If he continues in the trajectory he’s currently on, then those years are going to be something special.

Unfortunately though, they won’t be spent under Jurgen Klopp. Although Mac Allister feels in some ways to be the perfect Klopp midfielder, he’ll continue his career under a different coach next season.

No matter, the Argentina international has the brains to slot in under whoever takes the reigns at Anfield. Jurgen called him a ‘football doctor’ recently such is his level of expertise in the game. Macca won’t have a problem adapting.

As Liverpool fans, we’ve been lucky to see some super players come and go over the Klopp era. When all is said and done though, in terms of signings, there may not be many who stack up with Mac Allister pound for pound. What an addition, what a player.
