Last night was another reminder of just how special Jurgen Klopp is for Liverpool. Klopp was without so many key players for this game against Southampton. But even with pretty much a good chunk of the first team squad missing, there was never any doubt about the result.
Klopp just has this ability to bring the best out of the fringe and young players in his squad. That’s exactly what happened against Southampton as well. Lewis Koumas was handed his Liverpool debut, and he immediately scored in the first half with his first ever shot for the senior team.
Then along came Jayden Danns, who a week prior had never played a single game for Liverpool. He had already shown at Wembley just how much a goal threat he can be. And he proved that yet again, scoring a brace, and writing himself into Liverpool folklore.

Jurgen Klopp writing Liverpool history
With both goal-scorers being 18-years-old for Liverpool on the night, Klopp also achieved something for the first time in the club’s history. According to Opta’s Michael Reid, Liverpool have never had two players aged 18-years-old or younger score in the same senior game for the club.
That in itself is pretty remarkable. It shows just how much faith Klopp puts in his younger players. But perhaps what is even more impressive is that when Klopp arrived at the club, Michael Owen was the club’s youngest ever goal-scorer in the FA Cup at 19-years-old and 20 days.
Since then, a total of six Liverpool players have broken that Owen record in the FA Cup including Koumas and Danns. The total list and ages of the players are as follows:
- Kaide Gordon – 17 years 3 months 4 days
- Jayden Danns – 18 years 1 month 10 days
- Lewis Koumas 18 years 5 months 13 days
- Sheyi Ojo – 18 years 7 months 1 day
- Harvey Elliott – 18 years 10 months 2 days
- Curtis Jones 18 years 11 months 6 day
What a list. It’s nice to see that four of them were still on the pitch last night. Meanwhile, Jones is regarded as a key player for the club’s first team as well.
