Last night was special for so many reasons for Liverpool. It was a night to remember for the young academy lads who came in once again and stepped up for Jurgen Klopp’s first team.
This time around, Lewis Koumas took the spotlight with his opening goal in the first half. Bobby Clark also put in a great performance, creating the most chances on the pitch in the first half (3) and also getting an assist for Koumas’ fist goal.
Then along came Jayden Danns, who was simply sensational, scoring a brace in a second-half cameo. Danns had shown in the last few games he can be a huge goal threat, and it was nice to see that paying off. He has been brilliant at academy level all season and is very highly regarded.
It was no surprise to see him being awarded the MOTM award after the game. It’s difficult to argue against him after scoring a brace. However, there was another player who put in a great performance, and who also deserved the recognition. But nobody is talking about him.

Harvey Elliott deserved MOTM
Amid all the excitement about the club’s young players, Harvey Elliott’s performance last night went very under the radar for Liverpool. The 20-year-old not only created the most chances on the pitch (5), he also made the most recoveries (8) for Liverpool.
That alone is a special showing. However, to do that after having played 288 minutes in a week is even more special. Especially, making the most recoveries on the pitch. Elliott had played 90 minutes against Luton last week, and 120 minutes at Wembley on Sunday. The fact that he had the energy to dictate the match for Liverpool and also put in the effort to make so many recoveries definitely warrants him the MOTM award.
Yet, instead, nobody really spoke nor highlighted his efforts. That feels a little harsh. Everyone is rightfully excited about the prospect of Danns and Koumas. But Elliott’s efforts deserve to be recognised as well. Last night was another brilliant showing from the 20-year-old. Recently, Klopp has said he was ‘exceptional’ in training. It’s nice to see him putting in those performances in matches as well.
