Liverpool were forced to field a number of youngsters during the Carabao Cup final today.
The Reds were already depleted heading into the match against Chelsea. And after Ryan Gravenberch was injured following a poor tackle from Moises Caicedo, there was more injury news to follow. Joe Gomez replaced him less than half an hour in.
As a result, Jurgen Klopp had virtually no senior players to call upon as the game headed into the second-half. Youth was needed.
One of those Klopp turned to was Bobby Clark. Having been in and around the first-team for the last year or so, Clark’s importance to the squad has gradually increased.
That reached its peak this afternoon as Clark replaced Conor Bradley after 72 minutes. The big stage didn’t seem to faze the 19-year-old, who immediately threw himself into the action. And commentating on Sky Sports, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher praised what he’d seen from the youngster.
“He’s done really well Clark since he’s come on,” Carragher raved. “That’s three or four times he’s been involved.”
Clark makes step up
Clark was indeed a real livewire when he came on for Liverpool. To those who have watched him closely recently, that won’t necessarily have been a surprise.
Clark has been really impressive over recent weeks.
Even had the Reds not been affected by the injuries they have, there’s a chance he may have been on the bench at Wembley anyway today.
Klopp certainly rates him very highly and the former Newcastle United youngster once again showed why today.
Some supporters may have been worried with such youth on the pitch against a vibrant Chelsea team. But Clark’s tenacity marks him out as someone mature beyond his years.

Other players may have been overawed by coming into such a big occasion, but Clark took it all in his stride.
On just his ninth appearance in senior football, Liverpool’s No.42 stood up to be counted.
With game into the dying seconds of extra-time, it was Clark who’s shot won the corner that Virgil van Dijk headed home for the Reds.
Although his football career has barely begun, the teenager is already a Carabao Cup winner with Liverpool. And how he deserves it. How they all do. A night that will live long, long, long in the memory for Liverpool Football Club and for Bobby Clark.
