Liverpool are seemingly still very much full steam ahead on the idea of hiring Xabi Alonso as manager for next season.
According to reports yesterday, the Reds have already made contact with Alonso over taking over from Jurgen Klopp this summer. He’s without doubt Liverpool’s first choice.
That’s a fact now reiterated by The Independent, who have named the Spaniard as the man Liverpool will ‘push hardest’ for to succeed Klopp.
However, with Bayern Munich also very much in the frame for Alonso, they have also drawn up a plan B. In the event that their former player chooses to join Munich or stay at Bayer Leverkusen, the Reds have seemingly got two big options – Roberto De Zerbi and Ruben Amorim.
According to The Independent though, it’s Amorim who is now seen as the more likely candidate between the two.
The Sporting coach is claimed to be ‘attracting the interest of major clubs’ although not quite as strongly as Alonso. One of those clubs is said to be Liverpool, with the Reds having reportedly now identified him as their Alonso alternative.
Amorim seen as Alonso alternative
This is good news. From a lot of Liverpool’s supporter’s perspectives, it’s basically Alonso or bust to replace Klopp.
A view has emerged that unless the Reds can convince their former midfielder to come back this summer, then they’re doomed to end up with a dud instead.
But that simply isn’t the case. There are other options out there and Amorim is an outstanding one.
Not only is the 39-year-old more experienced than Alonso, but he’s also bagged a couple of trophies as a coach, too.
Of course, by the time Alonso is slated to rock up at Anfield, he too could have winners medals around his neck. And more prestigious ones than Amorim it must be said.

Nevertheless, Amorim is still a coach to be excited about. In the event that Liverpool lose out on their first choice, the former Portugal international would be a supreme consolation.
While the focus has been on Alonso and what he could achieve with Leverkusen, Amorim also has his team in contention for the title. Level on points and with a game in hand on Benfica at the top of the Primeira Liga, the manager could win his second championship in four years.
Also through to the last-16 of the Europa League, Amorim could yet come up against Liverpool this season. He should not simply be discarded.
As for De Zerbi, we just don’t think he’s quite there yet. Brighton haven’t been great this season. Consequently, we’re happy with this ordering. Interesting times ahead.
