Liverpool’s hunt for their new manager continues into its fourth week, with no announcement seemingly imminent.

The Reds hierarchy have of course had since November to search for Jurgen Klopp’s successor behind closed doors. But with the news now in the public domain for around a month, they appear no closer to finalising the appointment.

Nevertheless, it’s quite clear who their preferred choice would be. In fact, its’s been abundantly clear since more or less immediately after Klopp announced his decision that Xabi Alonso is the outstanding candidate.

That was once again something confirmed by journalist Florian Plettenberg on X late last night. However, Plettenberg also gave an update on a new, added complication to getting Alonso: Bayern Munich.

“The event of a mutual separation between Tuchel/FC Bayern in summer at the latest is a possible scenario,” says the reporter. “Plan A replacement for Bayern in this case: Xabi Alonso! Especially since Alonso has already been identified as the desired top candidate for a possible replacement of Tuchel.

“However, Alonso shows no signs of leaving Leverkusen at the moment and focuses on the unique opportunity to win the treble! In addition to Bayern, FC Liverpool also has him in mind as a successor to Jurgen Klopp. Bayern is informed about LFC‘s interest!”

Bayern battle Liverpool for Alonso

With Alonso reportedly dead-set on managing all of his the clubs he represented during his playing days, this was always going to be a danger.

As a result, Liverpool fans will have been nervously keeping one eye on Bayern’s recent dismal run of form.

The German champions have lost their last three games in all competitions – including to Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen. A latest loss – against VfL Bochum on Sunday – leaves them eight points adrift of Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga.

Having won the past 11 league titles, nothing less than perfection is expected of Bayern. Although Tuchel is obviously an elite coach, his position looks to be in real danger.

As the current best coach in their division and a former player to boot, Alonso would be the natural choice to replace the former Chelsea coach.

However, there have been reports that the Spaniard would actually prefer to join Liverpool over the Munich side this summer. From the outside looking in at least, the Reds would look like a steadier ship to board.

Having been aware that they need a new manager for three months now, you’d hope that Liverpool have been able to use their head start here, too. Nevertheless, Bayern is always a big draw.

For someone as careful and considered as Alonso though, the Bavarians would seem like a bit of a basket case right now. Come home Xabi, Liverpool is the only choice here.
