Like a bee buzzing around your ears on a warm summer day, Xabi Alonso’s name just keeps flying around Liverpool at the moment. Ever since Jurgen Klopp announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the season, Alonso’s name has been ever present in the media.

Speculation is rife whether the Bayer Leverkusen manager will become Klopp’s successor. Liverpool seem like an obvious choice for Alonso given his affiliation with the club and its supporters. However, it’s important to note the Reds are not the only team interested in taking Alonso away from Leverkusen. Bayern Munich, Chelsea and even Real Madrid are also possible destinations.

There is no surprise so many of Europe’s elite clubs are pursuing a move for Alonso. The former Liverpool midfielder is managing the only unbeaten team in all competitions from Europe’s top five leagues this season. However, there is one landmark even Alonso’s Leverkusen couldn’t reach before Liverpool.

Liverpool beat Xabi Alonso to landmark

Against Luton Town, Liverpool reached 100 goals in all competitions this season. Harvey Elliott was the scorer of Liverpool’s 100th goal, incidentally on his 100th appearance for the club’s first team.

This means that Liverpool have become the first team from Europe’s top five leagues to score 100 goals in all competitions this season. The Reds beat Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen to the landmark, who are on 95th goals in second place. Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are in third place with 94 goals. The rest of the teams are a bit further down with Real Madrid in fourth with 84 goals and Paris Saint Germain in fifth with 82 goals.

It’s a brilliant achievement for Liverpool made all the more impressive by how many key players were missing from Klopp’s team last night. Everyone has been raving about Bayer Leverkusen this season, but Liverpool have been up there as one of the most entertaining sides this season, and clearly the most prolific as well.

Alonso has a big decision to make. However, based on this latest data, if I was him I would be leaning towards Liverpool.
