Darwin Nunez says he ‘loves’ 27-year-old Liverpool player after watching him against Luton Town last night

Last night’s win over Luton Town has the feeling of being a really big result in Liverpool’s season.

Ordinarily, that would sound like an odd thing to say about a 4-1 home win over a relegation threatened team. But given the fact that they trailed at half-time and – more importantly – are missing a clutch of key players, it was a real statement from the Reds.

One of those injured on the night was Darwin Nunez. Having been taken off after 45 minutes at the weekend, the big Uruguayan was not even ready for the bench yesterday. With Mohamed Salah also out, Liverpool were forced to put out a bit of a makeshift front three.

No matter though, all three of Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott scored. And judging by his activity on social media after the final whistle, it was Diaz who caught Nunez’s eye the most.

Having bagged his 10th goal of the season at Anfield, the Colombian took to Instagram to share his delight at the result.

“Big battle today,” Diaz concluded, alongside some shots of his goal and subsequent celebrations. “Come on Luchito I love you a lot,” replied Darwin in Spanish, complete with flame emoji. Aw.

Nunez loves Diaz

After the opening half last night, Nunez was perhaps just about the only one of a Liverpool persuasion who was loving Diaz.

The 27-year-old had two absolutely glorious opportunities to give the Reds the lead in the opening five minutes.

First, he just couldn’t get the ball out of his feet when put through one-on-one by a brilliant ball from Caoimhin Kelleher. Then, he smashed a left-footed shot wide from inside the area with just the goalkeeper to beat.

With Luton then taking the lead, it’s fair to say that Diaz could have even scored once or twice more before the half-time whistle went. It’s no surprise that the game represented the most shots he’s ever taken in a Premier League game.

As good as Lucho can be, this has been a bit of feature of his game this season. Without Nunez, Salah or Jota there to pick up the slack, his wastefulness looked all the more glaring.

But you really have to hand it to the Colombia international, he never stops running and working.

Instead of getting inside his own head about those blunders, Diaz pushed even harder. Eventually he was rewarded with the goal he deserved, dancing inside the penalty box and slotting home a nice finish past Thomas Kaminski. 10 goals is a healthy return now for Diaz who now has five in his last 10 games.

Just like Darwin, we have to say that we do love Lucho, too. But a little bit more ruthlessness in front of goal certainly would not go amiss! Onwards.
