Sometimes even Liverpool can make mistakes in the transfer market. Although in general the club’s transfer policy is usually sound. Every now and again an error slips through the cracks.
That’s definitely what happened when Liverpool let Taiwo Awoniyi depart the club back in 2021. Awoniyi was a promising striker, who had spent several years playing on loan and being contracted to the club. That year he had finally become eligible for a work-permit and started pre-season with the club during the 2021/22 campaign.
However, instead of giving him a chance in the first team, Liverpool let Awoniyi go to Union Berlin, where he finished the subsequent campaign as the German outfit’s top scorer and then joined Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
The rest is history, Awoniyi has become an invaluable player to Forest, and has scored several important goals already over the course of the last two seasons, including finding the back of the net against Liverpool as well last season.

Taiwo Awoniyi is the best finisher in the Premier League
In total, Awoniyi has eight goal contributions in 14 games in the Premier League for Nottingham Forest this season. His numbers are even more impressive when you consider he only started 11 games. In total in the last two seasons for Forest, Awoniyi has made 20 goal contributions in 47 games, which is impressive considering his side has been fighting for relegation for much of the two campaigns.
The Nigerian is a fantastic finisher, who has worked really hard to constantly evolve and improve his game. Now there is a statistic that Awoniyi is better in than anyone else in the Premier League.
According to Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football since the start of last season out of players who have scored a minimum of 12 goals, Taiwo Awoniyi has the best goal conversion with 28.6%, which is better than Erling Haaland (26.1%), Diogo Jota (22.5%) and Harry Kane (23.1%).
Awoniyi is clearly a very clinical forward. Someone Jamie Carragher has recently described as ‘unbelievable.’ He could have easily become a valuable squad player at Liverpool as well. In hindsight, it definitely would have made more sense to keep him at the club for a little bit longer.
