The reality is that nobody is perfect. We as humans are all fallible to some extent. That is simply the nature of the world – and the nature of human beings. It means we are all also capable of making mistakes, and do things that we regret.

This may be the case with one recent Liverpool transfer for Michael Edwards. In his final season at the club, Edwards decided to allow a promising young striker to leave Liverpool for pastures new. A young striker who would then go onto become a sensation at his new club, and later return to the Premier League to haunt Liverpool.

He is also a striker who Jamie Carragher has just admitted he is a huge fan of and praised him on Sky Sports’ Monday Night football, after yet another strong performance last weekend.

Jamie Carragher on Taiwo Awoniyi

Speaking on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports, Carragher highlighted Awoniyi as a player he is a huge fan of and signalled him out for special praise in the way he took his goal at the weekend.

“The first touch is unbelievable centre forward play. Holding the centre-back off because don’t forget he’s got no space, he knows the goalkeeper is going to be converging on him. I’m a huge fan of his. His goals towards the end of the season kept Forest up and it could do the same again,” Carragher said.

Liverpool of course sold Awoniyi for £6.5m (The Guardian) to Union Berlin back in 2021. He has since gone onto excel in the Premier League and become one of the most prolific forwards in the competition. Last season he even found the back of the net against Liverpool.

Still only 26-years-old, Liverpool may have regrets giving up on him too soon. After all Awoniyi spent years at Anfield going out on loan from one club to another, waiting to finally be able to acquire a work-permit. When he was finally eligible, that’s when Liverpool let him go. He is one who definitely slipped through the cracks, and someone the club will have regrets about selling a little bit too soon.
