Harvey Elliott says Liverpool player is about to ‘show the world’ how good he is

Liverpool welcomed back Mohamed Salah this week after facing eight games without the Egyptian.

There had been worries about how the Reds would cope with Salah. Initially away at AFCON with his country, the 31-year-old suffered a hamstring injury during the tournament and has only just returned.

But Liverpool showed that they have plenty of firepower even without Mo. One of those to really step up was Darwin Nunez. With four goals and four assists since the turn of the year, Darwin is in really good form. But speaking to liverpoolfc.com today, teammate Harvey Elliott said the Uruguayan can get even better.

“It’s just all credit to him, he’s an amazing player and he really helps us out in moments,” Elliott enthused. “He has scored some very important goals for us this season and since he’s joined. For us, to have him someone like him where you know where he’s going to be; he doesn’t complain, some games he doesn’t score but he puts 110 per cent effort in. That’s all we can ask of him. He’s going from step to step to step now and for him we’re all very happy.

“I think the whole world can see now. It’s hard for him to come from a different country first and foremost, but to a country where he doesn’t know the language, he couldn’t speak it. Now he has taken the responsibility of learning English and you can have a conversation with him now, which is nice.

“It’s just all credit to him. He’s going to kick on now and he’s going to show the world, that’s for sure.”

Nunez ready for further improvement

There were plenty of predictions last season that Nunez was ripe to explode as a Liverpool player. Some will feel that those expectations are still yet to be truly fulfilled.

But it’s undeniable that it has been a year of improvement for the 24-year-old. This time last season he was struggling to really even get into Liverpool’s starting XI.

Fast forward 12 months and Nunez is now one of the first names on the teamsheet. The Reds look so much better with their No.9 on the pitch.

As Elliott mentions, Darwin isn’t always clinical. This is something that has obviously been picked up on a lot during his time at the club so far and is and easy stick for rival fans to beat him with.

But the impressive thing about Nunez is that he never gives up. He isn’t deterred by missed opportunities, he’ll keep running and trying and giving everything for the team.

It’s this kind of ‘fearless’ nature which has led former Liverpool striker John Aldridge to draw comparisons with Darwin and Luis Suarez.

It isn’t the first time this link has been made, with Rio Ferdinand another to comment on the parallels between the two Uruguayans.

Whether Nunez ever ends up becoming as prolific as his countryman was at Anfield remains to be seen. But he’s certainly starting to go the right way about it.

Either way, the former Benfica hitman terrifies the opposition if he’s finding the net or not. Keep doing what you’re doing, Darwin. It’s coming.
