Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has already shaken off his horror miss against Toulouse last night.

Having performed with his usual all-action gusto – and grabbed himself a goal – Nunez had the chance to double his tally just after the hour mark.

But the 24-year-old got it all wrong. After superbly rounding the Toulouse defender and goalkeeper, Darwin rushed his shot and struck the post. Luckily, Ryan Gravenberch was on-hand to tuck in the rebound.

It was a galling moment for Nunez, who sunk to the floor in disbelief. But with the help of Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Reds No.9 got back to his feet.

With his name reverberating around Anfield in the immediate aftermath, it’s clear that Liverpool fans forgave him for the miss. And taking to Twitter this morning, Darwin has added his own thoughts.

“It’s okay,” writes the striker, with a wink and a grin. “‘I’m still strong and working to improve personally and help Liverpool.” Great mentality.

Nunez the mentality monster

Much was often made of Jurgen Klopp’s ‘mentality monsters’ tag for his first great Liverpool team.

The Reds would routinely pull wins from the fire and whenever the odds were against them, they seemed to come out on top.

This was exemplified in the mindset of individuals like Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, as well as the collective feeling of the group.

But last season, that feeling completely evaporated from Liverpool. At times, the nickname was reversed to dub them the ‘mentality midgets,’ and that was fair.

However, with the injection of determined characters like Dominik Szoboszlai, Liverpool’s fight has returned this season.

And in all of this Reds team, there isn’t anyone who personifies that spirit like Darwin Nunez.

He isn’t perfect, and he has missed a few too many of these since arriving just over a year ago. But he always, always bounces back. Nunez never lets the misses affect him, and that willingness to carry on is what has made him an instant hero on the Kop.

Keep fighting Darwin, the whole fanbase couldn’t be more behind you.
