When it comes to picking the greatest players of all time, there are so many debates. It can be an endless cycle. Because at the end of the day football is not an objective sport. Yes, on the face of it – the game is determined by goals – ergo making it objective.

However, under the surface there are simply too many variables and subjective elements to the game, which makes it so unpredictable. And also so easy to debate and disagree on certain elements of it. Even just on a mere refereeing decision – thousands and thousands will argue over the internet and in person whether it was right.

But of course it’s not just about refereeing decision. One of the biggest debates when it comes to the sport the best players and teams are in the history of the sport. Which again is something so impossible to determine. Which is what Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer might have found out recently when they decided to have a discussion about the greatest Liverpool forward of all time.

Gary Lineker on Luis Suarez

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Lineker and Shearer got into a discussion about who they thought Liverpool’s best striker of all time was, and they didn’t seem to agree with one another.

Shearer began by claiming that it had to be Ian Rush: “It’s got to be Rushy, hasn’t it? Got to be Ian Rush.”

Lineker replied by disputing that claim and naming Luis Suarez instead.

“He’s up there. He’s obviously the second best striker of his time… he was unbelievable. But I think Suarez, you know.”

Shearer replied with: “Really?” And then Lineker went onto explain his reasons why, using Steven Gerrard’s previous words to support his hypothesis.

Steven Gerrard said he’s the best player he’s ever played with. He’s probably a better all round footballer than Rushy.”

Ian Rush is Liverpool’s record goal-scorer. He is one hundred percent a legend, who has won it all at Anfield. However, Suarez was a special player. The kind who pretty much carried Liverpool on his back while he was at the club. He was also capable of creating magic moments. So, we have to agree with Lineker Suarez will go down as one of the best, if not the greatest.
