Liverpool rode their luck at times against Burnley but in the end all that matters is the final score. At this stage of the season with Liverpool fighting for the title – three points at all costs is the objective for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
And against Burnley, they duly delivered. Even if things weren’t as smooth sailing as perhaps some fans will have expected. Although it’s important to look at the context of the win.
There were so many key players missing due to injury for this game. On top of that, Klopp and his coaching staff also had to contend with an outbreak of flu, which meant even more players were unavailable for this game.
But thankfully other players stepped up in their absence – including two who really impressed Virgil van Dijk.

Virgil van Dijk on two players who impressed him vs Burnley
Speaking to the Liverpool ECHO after the game, club captain Virgil Van Dijk revealed he was particularly impressed by the performance of two players against Burnley.
Those two players being Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones.
“Very, very impressed (with Harvey) and Curtis (Jones) when he went to right-back,” Van Dijk said.
“It’s very important for these guys that when they have their moments, Harvey in this case, they grab them with both hands. We need them. Even if you start on the bench, you have to be ready to make an impact. This was a great example of that again. This season there has been a lot of players who have come from the bench and made a difference. That’s what we need.”
Elliott will grab the headlines for his involvement in Liverpool’s two goals in the second-half. The 20-year-old was rightly handed the Man of the Match award for his superb performance. But Jones deserves a lot of credit for stepping into Trent Alexander-Arnold’s role in the right-back position. He hardly put a foot wrong in the second-half and looked very comfortable. It’s not for the first time either this season that he has been asked to play in that position.
