Liverpool weren’t at their best during today’s 3-1 win over Burnley, but they still got the job done.
On a day where the Reds had to make do with illness running through their squad, they had to battle at Anfield, but came out on top anyway.
A big part of the reason they eventually collected the three points was Harvey Elliott. Along with Caoimhin Kelleher, Elliott was comfortably Liverpool’s best player on the day, despite only playing 45 minutes.
This was reiterated by Andy Robertson after the game. Speaking to LFCTV, Robertson was asked about the 20-year-old’s impact.
“The last couple of weeks I’ve been coming off the bench and it’s not easy, but Harv always seems to make an impact,” raved the left-back
“I thought he was different class in the second half. He took the game by the scruff of the neck, started creating things, started ticking us over. He was excellent the wee man so fair play to him. His attitude’s always spot on, he always gives his all for this team and that’s what we need, it’s a full squad effort.”
Robertson praises Elliott impact
Robertson is absolutely spot on in his assessment here. Elliott was a big part of the reason Liverpool were able to wrestle back control of today’s game.
Interestingly, had all been well, it’s unlikely that the England U21 international would have got on as soon as he did.
However, with Trent Alexander-Arnold picking up a knock, Jurgen Klopp chose to move Curtis Jones to right-back. This opened up a spot in the midfield.
It could have then been Ryan Gravenberch coming on. The Dutchman has tended to be the fourth or fifth man in midfield this season and tends to get on if he’s on the bench.
But Klopp revealed after the game that Gravenberch had also felt a slight tweak before the game. He wasn’t to be risked.

As a result, the manager turned to Elliott. 45 minutes later, he will have been delighted that he did so.
After his ball in for Luis Diaz took a big nick off the Burnley defender, it may be that Harvey ends the game with just the one assist – for Darwin Nunez.
But even if the record books don’t show it, Elliott created Diaz’s go-ahead goal. He made both Liverpool’s goal in the second-half.
It still feels like the No.19 isn’t the best option to start in some games, no matter his form. In certain moments though, Elliott has come up big for Liverpool this season. Time to add another one to the pile.
