Liverpool’s game against Burnley wasn’t a pretty watch. The Reds rode their luck at times. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, as the 3-1 scoreline would suggest. However, in the end, Jurgen Klopp’s men got through it.
Even when things seemed to go against them, Liverpool adapted well to the changes. When the Reds were forced into a change and Trent Alexander-Arnold had to be substituted at half-time, Curtis Jones stepped in – not for the first time – to play at right-back.
Jones has really grown as a player this season. With departures to key players in midfield, he has become one of Jurgen Klopp’s most experienced midfielders. And he’s proving himself in several different positions – just like a former Liverpool captain once did under Klopp’s leadership.
Curtis Jones is Klopp’s new Henderson?
At his prime, Jordan Henderson was one of the first names on Klopp’s team sheet at Liverpool. Not simply just because he was captain. But also because he could be relied upon to play any role.
Under Klopp, Henderson didn’t just play the number eight, box to box midfield role – he also played as a holding midfielder, centre-back and even right-back when called upon.
Now Jones is playing a similar role. He’s pretty much a guaranteed stater, but he’s also capable of coming in and playing not just in his preferred position but other areas of the pitch as well.
Since pre-season we’ve seen him covering as a holding midfielder during a crisis, and during the regular season he has now played several times as a right-back as well. And as he proves himself in more and more areas on the pitch – he becomes more and more useful for Klopp’s side.
