Not only are Liverpool currently looking for a brand new manager right now, they need a sporting director, too.
In some ways, it could be seen as a good thing to have a completely fresh start in these two, key areas of the club. In others, it could be regarded as having strong potential for disaster. Quite which way it swings is obviously dependent on who Liverpool bring in.
For some, the clear choice would be to make an attempt to bring former sporting director Michael Edwards back to the club. Seen as the architect behind Liverpool’s greatest transfer dealings under Klopp, Edwards left in 2022.
Despite links to jobs at other clubs, the 44-year-old is yet to take on an official position elsewhere. And according to the Liverpool ECHO, it’s likely to stay that way, even if his old team get on the phone.
They claim that there has been ‘no suggestion’ that Edwards would even think about a return to Anfield at this point.
The data guru is reportedly assisting ‘several’ English clubs via his company Ludonautics at present. Working alongside Liverpool’s former director of research Ian Graham, it’s claimed that Edwards has ‘clearly moved on’ from the Reds.
Edwards not in the running for Liverpool
It perhaps wouldn’t be a good look for either Edwards or Liverpool for this to happen. Although it may well be great news in some respects, it would hint at the analyst having a problem with Klopp.
Maybe some will see that as irrelevant. But from our point of view that isn’t really the message the club should be sending out.
On a sporting director level, there are plenty of other options out there right now. Interestingly, the ECHO highlight a number of these, with West Ham’s Tim Steidten perhaps the most fascinating.
Steidten has only been with the Hammers since the start of the season. That isn’t why the German should pique interest amongst the fanbase, though.

No, the 44-year-old is actually the former Bayer Leverkusen technical director. Yes, it was Steidten who hired a certain Xabi Alonso as Leverkusen’s manager in 2022.
With Alonso the clear favourite for Klopp’s position next season, that could be significant.
Other names are put forward too. However, people such as Bournemouth’s Richard Hughes and Tiago Pinto formerly of Roma are unlikely to generate much excitement.
Edwards would get the fans talking, but his reunion may pose more questions than answers. For us, from this list at least, Steidten looks like the man to go for.
