Manchester United discuss Michael Edwards as a potential sporting director, according to reports. He left Liverpool in 2022.

This comes from the Athletic. They claim that people close to Manchester United name Michael Edwards as a potential new sporting director.

That’s something the Daily Mail reported last June, of course. However, United are now stepping up their pursuit of a new director. It’s also worth mentioning that, per the Athletic, Liverpool didn’t believe that Edwards would jump straight into a new Premier League job right after leaving the club.

Edwards formally left Liverpool last summer. He’d spent around a decade at Anfield, helping them develop into one of the world’s best sides.

He’s someone Jurgen Klopp loved working with, as seen in the German’s farewell message to Edwards. Now he’s a name on the lips of those at Liverpool’s biggest rivals.

Perhaps the most worrying part of this comes from the Telegraph. They don’t name potential destinations but report that Edwards could link up with Julian Ward at a new club.

Ward is Edwards’ successor at Liverpool but he will leave at the end of this season. He does so alongside Ian Graham, the Reds’ Head of Research.

That trio – a group that has done a lot of incredible work at Liverpool – will be in enormous demand if they do decide to team back up. And United are one of the best-placed clubs for them to land.

Liverpool fans can feel free to worry about this one, then. While Klopp is the major factor that’s seen such growth over the last decade, the Reds’ recruitment isn’t too far behind.

That kind of proven knowledge rocking up at Old Trafford would be a serious blow, even if they lack Klopp to truly put it all together.
