Liverpool still trying to buy £4.5m wonderkid, his club think they can get a record sale

With less than a week of the month left to run, it feels likely that Liverpool’s transfer window is going to end quietly.

Despite links in the rumour mill – mainly to defenders – nothing really looks imminent at Anfield. With the Reds going well across all four competitions right now, that feels fair enough.

Nevertheless, according to Swedish outlet Fotbolll Direkt, there is still the potential of one arrival for Liverpool. After Rousing The Kop exclusively revealed that Liverpool are in talks with BK Hacken over the signing of 18-year-old Momodou Sonko, they claim that those discussions remain ongoing.

With the Swedish season currently in recess, Sonko is preparing for pre-season with Hacken. But as per Fotboll Dirket, his arrangements continue to interrupted by negotiations with Liverpool.

So far, it’s claimed that the Gothenburg based side have turned down offers of around £3.4m for Sonko. It isn’t specified whether this was from Liverpool, with ‘four or five’ other clubs still said to be in the running. Along with the Reds, Bologna are the only other team mentioned by name.

With fierce competition for the youngster, Hacken are reportedly continuing to stand firm on price. Although the current bidding is said to be around £4.5m for Sonko, the Swedish club are claimed to be asking for even more. Hacken’s current record sale is £3.9m and they are reportedly now certain to smash that when Sonko is sold.

Liverpool still in Sonko talks

If Liverpool are to do any business in the final days of the transfer window, then it’s likely to be something like this.

Should Sonko be signed, it’s likely that he’d head back to Hacken until the summer anyway.

As a result, it’s fair to say that unless something quite improbable happens, Liverpool will not be adding to their first-team this month.

Despite that, it’s always good to hear that the Reds are keeping a close eye on the future. Sonko has been a standout young player in Europe over the past year or so.

Already earning a call-up to the Sweden national team, the winger looks set to have a big future. Liverpool have been brilliant at bringing through young players of late, so why shouldn’t that be at Anfield?

It’s true that there are others who would be standing in his way on Merseyside. Big things are still expected of Ben Doak and Kaide Gordon, while Trent Kone-Doherty is another making waves.

But should Liverpool be willing to pay £4.5m or more for Sonko, then that would be a clear signal of their feelings. They wouldn’t be putting that kind of fee down if they didn’t see a future for Sonko at the club.

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see where this one lands. Liverpool seem to be pushing with some urgency to get things tied up, so perhaps there’ll be movement in the coming days.
