Callum Wilson may have made an even worse prediction about Liverpool than Michail Antonio

Liverpool fans could have been forgiven for feeling a little annoyed at seeing Michail Antonio covering their game last night.

Antonio has recently openly admitted to having a public feud with Liverpool supporters. The West Ham United forward even claimed that Reds fans are the reason he doesn’t want Jurgen Klopp’s team to win the league this season.

Nevertheless, there he was, on Sky Sports last night to give his take on Fulham vs Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Exactly what kind of insight was to be expected from someone who previously claimed that his own team – West Ham – would finish above the Reds this season, we’re not sure.

Antonio made that bold, brazen prediction while speaking on his show ‘The Footballer’s Football Podcast‘. Almost unbelievably though, it turns out that it may not have been the worst claim made on the show this season.

That dubious title might actually belong to Antonio’s co-host, Callum Wilson. Back in August having seen Liverpool draw away at Chelsea, Wilson predicted that the Blues would finish the season above Klopp’s side.

Wilson claim looking foolish

To be fair to Wilson, he wouldn’t have been the only one to come to this conclusion back in August. His reasoning was relatively sound, too.

“I think Chelsea will probably finish higher than Liverpool just because they have invested heavily and they are still active in the market at the moment, which is only going to strengthen their position,” said the Newcastle United striker.

“Whereas Liverpool are losing targets which are then going to Chelsea.”

Fair enough, right? Even after that first game, Chelsea looked a good bet to push hard towards the top of the table. Liverpool meanwhile, still had plenty to prove after a terrible 2022/23 season.

But in the months since, the two teams have gone in opposite directions. The Reds have turned into the most difficult side to beat in the division and currently sit top of it.

Chelsea on the other hand have failed to address the problems of last season. Heading into February, Mauricio Pochettino’s team are ninth in the table. Of course, things could still turn around dramatically. But with 17 points between the team, it would take a major collapse from Liverpool for that to happen.

Antonio isn’t off the hook either. However, West Ham are four points and three places better off than Chelsea, so he’s currently winning out in this one.

With so much of the season still to go, we don’t want to be getting ahead of ourselves. But we think we can pretty safely say that both Wilson and Antonio have been left with egg on their faces here. Not the first time. Won’t be the last.
